Mostly seen scavenging the ground and low brush for food, often alongside White-crowned Sparrows. The size and color of its crown patch, in combination with black stripes, can determine its rank and dominance. During the breeding season, the vibrant golden patch on its head becomes more prominent, serving as a signal to rivals and potential mates. These sparrows are primarily found in shrubby habitats and open woodlands, migrating between their northern breeding grounds in Alaska and their wintering areas along the Pacific Coast.
